Theory of Change

In simple terms, the Valo approach is how we bring our mission to life. Our work begins with the understanding that too many young people feel disconnected — from themselves, from one another, and from the world around them. We believe this can change. By creating spaces for meaningful connection, curiosity, and reflection, teens can discover who they are and how they want to show up in their communities.
We know that growth is not linear, and that real wellbeing takes time, care, and practice. Valo’s approach focuses on relationships and recognizes that transformation happens when people feel seen and heard. As an organization centered in connection and belonging, how we do our work is just as important as what we do.
Below, you can see and read about the components that, together, form Valo’s approach to advancing our mission.

Our Ways of Being - curiosity, openness, vulnerability, connection - are at the heart of it all. These tenets help teens look within themselves, see each other, and experience belonging at a time when life can feel overwhelming and isolating.

Our mission is at the center of who we are and all we do. It is the north star that orients us and continually informs our decisions and actions. Alongside community partners and families, Valo cultivates a culture of connection by creating spaces where youth can step away and practice transformational ways of being that support their mental health.

Rooted in evidence-informed practices, our programs promote a lifetime of wellbeing. Youth thrive in unplugged spaces that invite conversation, time in nature, mindful practices, play, cooking, and creating — where real connections take hold and our circles widen.

We envision a world where youth are empowered to care for their emotional wellbeing and foster deep connections throughout their lives.
